Research: Develop and Demonstration Project; 10 kW Parabolic Trough Power Generations Integrated with Biomass Steam Boiler

Concentrating solar thermal power plant technology is new generation of power plants, with concentrating solar power system. Concentration of solar radiation is achieved by reflecting or refracting the flux incident on an aperture area onto a smaller receiver/absorber area. Currently, there are about three main types of concentrating solar power systems: parabolic-trough, dish/stirling engine and power tower. Recently, the solar parabolic trough power plant comes to be commercial in Asia.

The Solar parabolic trough system in this project was installed in the Energy Park at SERT with the funding support from DEDE, Ministry of Energy, Thailand. This aims to study the system performance, environmental effect and possibility for electricity and steam generation business encouragement in Thailand.

The solar array of parabolic trough power plant consists of flour rows of collectors,with length of 24 meters each. There are 4 segments in each row,with length of 6 meters each. Each segment consists of 6 panels made of composite parabolic trough with reflector that has 88% reflectivity. The surface area is 233 m2. These concentrate the sunlight onto an absorber tube along a caustic line. The solar radiation concentrated in the absorber tubes heats water to temperatures of around 180OC-250OC. The resulting water vapour drives a turbine-generator set, as same as the conventional steam power plants. In this system, 100 kWt Biomass Steam Boiler is integrated to generate steam of 200 kg/hr under maximum pressure of 17 bar, in order to sustain the plant in the depletion of solar radiation.
